Everyone acknowledges the importance of teaching drawing in foundation art courses, yet students and community members have few opportunities to see examples of really great drawing in person. This exhibition presents the work of three highly skilled and innovative contemporary artists who use drawing as their primary means of expression. Joan Linder—chair of the art department at University of Buffalo--draws exact facsimiles of the papers that pile up on her desk, such as cash register receipts, bills, and paycheck stubs. Melissa Cooke (Minneapolis, MN) uses powdered graphite and brushes to render large, hyperrealist portraits of herself wearing face paint and masks. Hollis Hammonds (Austin, TX) draws personalized comic strip pages and assembles three-dimensional collages evocative of disaster.
